The aggravation of getting a stain out of your carpet can make you nervous about every spill. If you don't take care of it quickly, the worry is that it will never come out. Perhaps the conventional wisdom of carpet stain removal products just isn't up to the task. Some cleaners can even be harmful to the fibers of your carpet.

Carpet stain removal involves several important factors. Using the right type of cleaning product, the right blotting technique and the right motion might be the difference between cleaning the stain or not.

The basis of any good carpet stain cleaning is what cleaners you will use. There are some household products you should keep on hand for such an occasion that will be quite useful for most stains. Paper towels or white cotton towels are best. They are gentle and won't bleed colors onto your carpet. For cleaners, start with a clear liquid detergent. Residues left by scented or colored detergents will attract dirt. You should also keep a spot and stain remover specifically made for carpets. Others may have chemicals that could do damage. Several more all-purpose cleaners to keep around are ammonia, white vinegar and club soda. Dilute one tablespoon of ammonia in one cup of water, but do not use any ammonia containing cleaner on wool. Vinegar should be mixed in equal parts with water. Nail polish remover can also help in certain stain removal situations. Be sure to get a non-oily kind.

To clean the stain from your carpet, take a white cotton towel or paper towel and gently blot, soaking up as much liquid as possible. Start on the outside, working your way in to prevent spreading. Once finished blotting, use just enough cleaner to cover the spot. Next, rinse with water, but avoid soaking the carpet. Lay another towel or paper towels over the carpet spot, placing some sort of weight on top. Leave the towels to soak up the mess for 24 hours. The stain should hopefully be gone. For particularly difficult stains, you may need to repeat the process.
