Hardwood floors can be a fantastic and attractive feature in a home. With proper care and regular cleaning, they can last for years. But upkeep definitely takes some effort. If you have an active household with kids, pets or regularly entertain guests, it's all the more important to care for and protect your hardwood floors.

Dirt, dust, pet hair and furniture can wear away at the finish through regular daily life. Spills and general moisture can also damage hardwood if not cleaned up promptly. Consider these tips to keep your hardwood floors looking great for years to come.

To begin, the type of finish used on your flooring will determine some of the products and cleaning procedures. Using the wrong cleaning product can ruin a finish. Urethane is the most commonly used finish for newer hardwood floors. Other finishes may require alternative care.

Protection comes in many forms. It is best to prevent dirt and mud from ever reaching your floors. Doormats both inside and outside entryways are great at removing debris from footwear when entering a home. Be sure not to place rubber or vinyl backed rugs on hardwood floors though, because they may trap moisture.

While doormats may reduce the dirt that finds its way inside, it's still important to vacuum, sweep or use a dust mop as needed. Walking on hardwood covered in dirt, dust and grit is almost like wearing sandpaper slippers. It will drastically reduce the life of your floors.

Wood does not stand up to moisture very well. Water and other spills must be cleaned up right away. Do not wet-mop or otherwise clean your floors with water. Water damage can't be sanded out.

Use a specially formulated cleaner specifically made for hardwood floors with a non-abrasive cloth to clean. Microfiber and terrycloth are two good options.

Lastly, cover large windows with blinds, curtains or shades to prevent direct sunlight exposure. Part of the appeal of hardwood is the color. If you've seen a sun-worn wooden deck, you'd probably prefer to keep the warm color your floors currently have.
